“Hey Adam, just started listening to your audio blogs tonight, and since I'm an audio engineer I thought I might be able to give you some advice.
First, forget the compressor. What you're looking for is a good limiter. The difference between a limiter and a compressor is the ratio of gain reduction, and what this means is that although a compressor will gradually make sounds quieter as they get louder, a limiter, with a much higher ratio, will be like a brick wall that those sounds won't be able to get past.
The only thing you'll need then is a gate, and what the get does is cuts the audio signal off if it drops below a certain amplitude. This way, when you're not talking there will be 0 background noise. Using these two tools together, you'll have all your music and your voice at a comfortable volume at all times, and during the points where there's no sound and background could be noticeable, the gate will get rid of that noise, giving you that professional sound.
Last but not least, you need some acoustic treatment in your room. if you really want that professional sound, you need to eliminate any room noise, preferably with a booth. You can put together a makeshift one using bedding and the like.
