“Don't forget to take a look at the Guildhall and Church Street as they are today in Google STREET VIEW. In the map box, just 'drag' the Orange 'Human' icon - from the top left-hand corner - and 'drop' it on the map at the AudioBoo microphone.”

“For several centuries the school had shared accommodation in the half-timbered Guildhall with the town council. During Peter's time at school the council used part of these buildings to house the town's horse-drawn fire-engine. One of the town council's manual fire engines is now kept at Mary Arden's Farm http://houses.shakespeare.org.uk/mary-ardens-house.html & can be seen in this photo on flickr http://flic.kr/p/8n7PF2”

“At the point Peter mentions the Reverend Lawrence, you may not quite be able to hear his whispered comment that . . . "He used to get tight ! "”

“The headmaster during Peter's time at the school was Robert Laffan. When he was appointed in 1885 the school consisted of under forty boys and just two assistant masters. He used his own funds to employ further staff and as a result additional subjects were added to the curriculum and better examination results were achieved. This in turn attracted more pupils to the school.”

“Peter's family lived in the town's High Street, where his father ran a bookshop and private lending library, so in the morning Peter had only a short walk to the Guildhall in Church Street where the school was housed.”
