“Hello Greg,
As a Lulu employee I feel like I have to respond to your comments on Blurb vs. Lulu because many of the advantages you merit Blurb for, Lulu pioneered.
First, I think I should mention that Lulu started out of our own CEO's first hand frustrations with publishing. Lulu was created to offer authors with options and the freedom to publish anything they want – absolutely for free.
At Lulu it is all about sharing ideas and we are committed to a single goal: helping authors sell more books.
Control is entirely in the author's hands and you are free to create anything you want, from hardcovers to eBooks, photo books to cookbooks. And you keep 80% of the price you set for your works.
Yes, Lulu offers services, but no author is "locked in" to anything. Services are entirely optional. Lulu is set up so that authors can publish at their own pace, and many author opt for the full DIY approach.
We so offer services though because we understand how much time and energy goes into creating your book and some authors need an extra hand with things like marketing, editing or cover design. Our services provide authors with peace of mind in knowing their book is going to look as good as it deserves to.
Many author want to be able to sell their books all over the world and reach as many readers as possible. While an ISBN is NOT required at all, an author would need one (which Lulu provides for free) in order to sell in any online store like Apple's iBookstore or brick and mortar stores like Barnes and Noble. Like all aspects of Lulu though, authors have the option of getting a free Lulu ISBN, bringing one of their own, or not having one at all.
The best part of all though, is Lulu is non-exclusive. That means an author is free to sell their work on Lulu, Blurb, Amazon, or any other place they want. Lulu provides the option for authors to reach new readers all over the world through the channels they prefer. The Lulu Marketplace has 2.5 million unique customers alone and it doesn't take anything other than the time to upload your work to sell there. It's just one more way to get your work in front of that many more people.
If you ask me, it doesn't get much more liberating or free than that.
