“CASCADE Rain cascaded from the sky and sheets of water wrung out by the wind snapped and whipped and kicked. Light was scattered by the fire of shattered water blasted through the air. Light tingled in the mire and trees that sunk like knotted men in pain or peace or sleep. Mists of rainbursts swayed across the hills and swept the flanks of bracken fields. We came running through the din like drowning ants scrabbling for the rim and danced along the muddied paths and cursed and spat and passed. ”
