MuseumSheffield Museums Sheffield Youth Forum worked with sound artist Neil Webb to produce six sound pieces inspired by the themes and artwork in Restless Times: Art in Britain 1914 –1945. The resulting sound works are intended to create dialogue between visitors and artworks within the exhibition. We found the Embracing the Modern section of the exhibition interesting because at the time of the production of most of the art, revolution was in the air. Transport was being radically modernised, which is represented in some of the pieces in this section. A particularly good, eye catching example of this is The Tube Station by Cyril Power. This was quite an exciting time in history when aspects of the future and modern world were emerging. We felt that Embracing the Modern embodies the spirit of progression, change and hope for the future that was present throughout the era. In our audio piece we tried to recreate the excitement of a newly modern world. We were inspired by new technologies of the time, such as machinery, electricity, the London Underground, plane travel and also the influence of European migration to Britain.
