TimNunn I'm afraid I'm not really up on identifying creatures in ditchs and couldn't see it through the vegetation, so don't have any other information than this sound. The only way I would have seen it would have been to severely disturb its environment. I was watching a Golden Eagle and noticed the sound virtually at my feet. It was a small drainage ditch coming off a hill. The sound was pretty quiet and I recorded it with everything on full.

150.1Heavy rain + nissen hut + leaky roof. Cove Park, Rosneath Peninsular, Scotland. 13 Feb 2011, 8am.

“At the Cove Park centre for artists on the Rosneath Peninsular, Scotland, there is a war-time Nissen hut that is pretty run-down. All night there had been very heavy rain and multiple leaks in the roof were flowing. The recording was made inside but the sound of a nearby stream and the rain itself is also audible. I was at Cove Park as part of a research project: 'Reflecting on Environmental Change through Site-based Performance'. 13 February 2011, 8:00am (approx) Excerpt. 1 like3 comments“Thank you Bulldozia. The recording was made for a show - 'Formel' (http://www.reelingwrithing.com/formel.html) but I really loved it and thought it was worth airing on its own. We were lucky to find this untended patch of long grass that was still frozen in frost. The frost gives each step its crunch. I am resisting commenting on the 'trundling' as you seem to get more pleasure from not knowing than knowing.” -

soundmap The trundling sound is intriguing, and the whole recording has a slightly hypnotic quality. An interesting and unusual addition to the UK Soundmap, many thanks for sharing it.

bulldozia I really like this. After a while I adjusted to the irregularities of rhythm and it began to sound like something more mechanical like a threshing machine or something. There is a layer of sound beneath the footsteps, a muted trundling as if something is being towed or pushed - but not on grass. Can't identify it, but the intrigue adds to the pleasure.

Why they just didn't just use the Wilhelm Scream, I don't know. Nigel falls off a roof...
“It never occurred to me that anyone would listen to this who didn't know 'The Archers', but oh the joy of the internet. So, 'The Archers' is a continuing radio Drama (soap) on BBC Radio 4. It has been running for sixty years and is a national institution. It's set in a rural farming community in the heartland of English England. The sixtieth anniversary edition included a controversial storyline that ended with the death of popular character 'Nigel', who fell from the roof of his home. Much more about the 'The Archers' can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/the-archers/” -

skevosmavros Judging by the length of his scream, I'm guessing he lived in a five-story home? ;-)
