“I thought you were petty close, as the sound was not muffled at all. SPL is Sound Pressure Level - the standard we use for measuring the "loudness" of sounds, although it's not really loudness (which is subjective) but a more objective measure of the power of a sound. It's the ratio of the mean pressure of the sound waves to the mean pressure at the threshold of human hearing. it's a useful measure to get used to, as the performance of microphones is specified in in terms of SPL. An SPL meter can be obtained for as little as 100 quid and it's a useful thing to carry in the recording pack, particularly if you're recording machine sounds..” -

“This is really intersting track. Was it recorded right up close to the turbine? Do you know the nominal SPL? I'm also seriously interested in the nature of the distant noise of single and multiple turbines.” -

“Thanks - it was a really easy one. Edirol R-44 on internal mics. It's amazing how simple it is to get good tracks provided the gear is up to scratch.” -

“This was recorded on Thursday 11 March 2010 at 14:40 GMT from the outside table of a coffee shop on the north side of Marylebone Road just west of Baker Street. Another demonstration of the reason we mostly fail to hear the sounds of the natural world.” -

soundmap I nearly ducked at one point while listening to this through headphones. Once again many thanks for adding the 'uksm' tag, it's now on the UK SoundMap.

“Thank you. This was a really easy one, made around 16:00 GMT on a Saturday in May 2009. It's a private beach, so it's not unduly frequented. The only problem was the shingle making metallic noises when it washed up and struck the legs of the tripod. The answer proved to be domestic pipe insulation foam, which makes a much quieter, dull sound that's hardly noticeable.” -

soundmap Yes, traffic rumble is almost inescapable anywhere near London. Pretty much the only place you don't hear it is underground.
-
Wild_Soundscape This recording (made in April 2010 at 5:30 in the morning) shows just how pervasive traffic noise can be. The location is semi-rural, 11 km west of the M1 and 4 km north of the A41.
