I'll never understand the thinking behind police "cover-ups" like the Blair Peach incident. The police, due to their position in authority, and the power they can wield, should be held totally and undeniably accountable when something like that happens. They should do everything they can to bring that offender to justice, or it makes a mockery of the whole process of law enforcement. If an accountant defrauds their client, or a doctor steals drugs, or a teacher abuses a pupil, you don't find the rest of their profession doing their best to hide it - quite the opposite, since one bad apple can spoil the lot.
