Conservative MPs are urging the party to do more to win back UKIP voters.
UKIP won around one in four votes in local elections on Thursday. The former leadership candidate, David Davis, said David Cameron should hold a referendum on EU membership before the general election. And the party's deputy chairman, Sarah Newton, said it should be considered.
The Home Secretary, Theresa May, said the UK's relationship with the EU had to be renegotiated before any referendum:
"The position we've set out -- that David set out in his European speech is the right one -- because if he wants to take a renegotiated settlement to the British people you've got to renegotiate it. Now we look at whether we can give some greater certainty in terms of the referendum. But the whole question is actually having a referendum on the basis of a renegotiated settlement.
