I got an iPhone 3GS a shirt while ago. I got it knowing that the iPhone 4 was due to come out. Why? The iPhone 3GS is tried and tested. It works. The 4? Well, Apple have a habit of releasing 1st gen products that don't quite work as promised. The iPad is having issues. I remember 1st gen iPods having issues. Heck, didn't 1st gen Macbooks have battery problems?
Upshot: Never buy a 1st gen Apple product. Apple produce amazing tech. But, WAIT for the 2nd or even 3rg gen of any product.
I'm left handed as well. At the moment I have the iPhone 4 in a plastic case and when holding the phone as I always have the mobile signal is fine but the wifi dips a bar. The wifi is directly below me in the room below.
I think that annoys me more than the mobile signal issue.
Anyway, more testing today. Liking the screen more and more. Low light on the camera looked good on the one I took last night.
Interesting views there. I agree that the carrier contract deals are a complete rip off. I paid £99 and £30 p/m 2 yrs ago, and I think o2 had the same deal last year for the 3GS but now that is nearly £300 for the device. Clearly upping the cost based on hype and estimated demand, and queues showed there always is a demand for these things.
I got my iPhone 4 the day it came out direct from Apple. Sadly my excitement was dampened after 10 minutes of play as I am one of those with the yellow dots on screen. I have a line of the stuff at the top of my screen and contrary to news, forum threads and the guy that sells the adhesive mine hasn't gone after over a week of daily use. In the morning its gone, but after use it heats up and you can see it clear as day. So it is going back to Apple very soon.
As for the signal shenanigans i've not experienced this on my device. I don't know if its anything to do with a cut sim (not using a micro sim)but left or right handed it not experienced any drop.
But down points aside, going from a 3G it's fantastic. Speed, display, video and image quality, best audio and video i've used on a mobile device, with incredible low light performance. Battery life has been great for me and the IOS4 multitasking has make using the iphone even better, although ive noticed at work the battery life has been terrible on 3G and 3GS.
Sorry, wasn't expecting to write so much. If you can get around the signal issues and you don't get a yellow stains on your screen then its a great update for a 1G or 2G (3G) device, but would need some more thought if you are a 3G (3GS) user, more so if you are still in contract.
It's laughable, and in some ways I find the whole thing a little unbelievable. A small part of me is holding onto the possibility that the upcoming iOS update in a few weeks time will fix more than the press release seemed to suggest. I was questioning how much I cared about all this earlier today; for me, Apple products do show an incredible dedication towards engineering precision. And I value that precision and innovation in the type of products I may choose to use. So this whole thing does irk me, perhaps more than I wish it did.
