Many thanks for adding the 'uksm' tag. Your recording has already been included on the UK SoundMap, but we've had to catch up on our acknowledgements due to the large number of contributions received lately.

There isn't much that can be done about recording hiss as it's inherent to the design and electronics of your particular microphone.

Also some natural sounds, in which our ears can detect structure and nuance, can end up as undifferentiated hissy noise when recorded, even with quite expensive mics. Examples include fountains and the sound of leaves or tall grass stirring in the wind.

Can't help with the recording issue I'm afraid, but it's an evocative boo.

Brambling

Any booers out there who can advise on how to cut down on background hiss? I'm recording with an iPod Touch and the mic that comes with the headphones.

Includes calls of herring gull, ringed plover and redshank; a helicopter taking off from Shoreham airport; traffic noise over the Norfolk Bridge and a westbound train over the River Adur rail bridge.
