I can understand irrational fears. I am TERRIFIED of needles; just the thought gives me sweat stains. But I'm rather looking forward to donating organs when it's my time. I know that I'm not going to have the biggest impact on the world, and I'm okay with that. But I think it'll be a good final act to give someone else life. My ex, though, told me that he refused to give any because he didn't like that idea of anyone else having this organs. I don't quite understand that train of thought; it's not a big deal once you're dead.
I too have thought about the whole organ donating thing and it scares me! I love my organs and I don't think I want to have them taken form me even if I'm dead. (The same goes for giving blood.) I mean being dead and then coming back to life is extremely rare and weird.
I live in the US where we are asked when we get our drivers licence if we want to be an organ donor. If you say yes that gets marked on your licence if you say no that gets marked. What most people don't know is that in the US anyway that is not technically legally binding. There are specific forms that one most fill out and sign to make it completely binding. Just having it marked on the licence lets your family know your preference, but if you don't have that legal paper work the doctors will still need to get permission from your family to harvest any organs.
That being said having marked on your licence can start conversation and allow people and families to talk about their wishes. I think that is really why they ask so that it starts the conversation so that we think about it and talk about it with our loved ones.
Personally, I was living in NJ and I just transfered my licence to PA and when I got the licence they asked me and I said yes without even having a second thought. I want my organs used if they can be used. My wife is the same way and although neither of us have the legal paper work filled out if something were to happen to either of us the other would choose to donate the other's organs. After all we don't need them we are dead and they might be useful to someone else and give life to someone else. How awesome is it that your last action in death is to supply someone else with life. It is just a great thing.
In my opinion, I want to leave a mark, and whatever I do in this life, I will make more of a difference to someone by being a donor. I love the idea that in my death, a blind person will get a new life and be able to see.
