I've felt that as well in reading a thriller right now. When you consider that we each carry around in our pockets, by way of smart phones, more computing power than was available to most small businesses twenty years ago, it's no wonder. I just chalk it up to the "willing suspension of disbelief" and go where the author's taking me :^)
There's also "War Games," from 1983, in which Mathew Broderick's character is using a huge home-built computer contraption - with a modem connection that required a telephone handset being placed in a special cradle...
It would be very interesting to watch the movie "The Net" starring Sandra Bullock (from the late 90s?) with our knowledge of the internet today. There's a great video on College Humor (or one of those sites) that's called "What If 24 Took Place in the 90s." Instead of Jack Bauer on the cell phone all the time, they make fun of fax machines, modems dialing up, etc. It's hilarious. Amazing how any time any technology is used in something nowadays, it gets so dated so quickly...Hell, i was watching an episode of The Office from 5 years ago, and couldn't help but notice how outdated somebody's phone was!
