I have the app called Lose It and it sounds like it does pretty much the same thing. The only thing you didn't mention is that you can also plug in exercise and it'll add the calories you burn to the total you can eat - which is motivating! But I have a hard time using it because I don't always eat food I can easily count. I google and guess, but then really wonder how accurate it is. But it has, in the past, helped me lose weight and pay attention to what I'm eating. And yeah, that is messed up about the Kindle ungiftability. Oh - one diet rule I made for myself a long time ago is that I don't drink calories except alcohol.
In a way that's exactly why I wanted to get the app. I wanted the shock factor a little. To see just how much was in that bottle of coke, that packet of crisps etc. It has really helped, it's made it much easier for me to control my intake.
my fight to keep the weight down would be made much easier were I to give up my daily dose of gin (which probably stands at somewhere between 14 and 21 oz.) and dry vermouth (2-6 oz.). Running helps, but still... I shudder to get that iphone app; I don't want to see how many cals just the booze has, never mind my meals--which are mostly carbs (pastas, rices). Ugh.
