I'd probably say a routine is important to ensure you have some loose structure to your day - but that the mental confines of 'deadline art' are destructive - so having a loose structure, that acknowledges what time of day you are most mentally active and allows for great flexibility and play within it, would be the way to go.

That said, I've worked at home with flexible hours for a while before I stopped my job and even with routine, it's hard to switch off. Don't think there's 'one way' - just a matter of 'tweaking' until you find yourself productive and happy.
