I don’t think that many people will wake up to the idea of sustainability until it’s too late. I would love to be able to say that I think we could last another 50 years in this direction but it is just not possible at this current time. Unless all of the big things change like religion, government etc we are not going in a very nice direction. I don’t think that many people will realize what an effect we have until we have basically ruined what we see as the earth now, and by that point it will be past the point of no return. I hate being pessimistic about it all but I really don’t have the hope in us as a species to band together and become sustainable. If somehow we did manage to change and trying to conserve what we have now is a goal I would be very happy. I currently studying for a degree an in Environmental Conservation so hopefully I will be able to save something haha!
i believe it could be sustained for another 50 years but how it will be sustained is another question. i worry about how much power some governments have over their people and all the things we never hear about much. im worried that our lives will become controlled to a degree that we have no longer a say. after watching some conspiracy
films like Zeitgeist i have become more aware of certain things. i dont mean now to believe everything you see in those types of films but people should just be more aware of certain things.
To answer the title question, yes, I know the world will last another 50 years. No, our resources will not run out and no, we will not destroy ourselves. But, I do agree with you that our resources are under threat with the way we currently manufacture and consume commodities. However, what a lot of people forget to factor into these arguments is change. We evolve and we change as time progresses. All reports about needing another planet in 2030 to sustain us etc, simply don’t factor in change or growth or learning. If you look back in time during the Industrial Revolution, the world, as people knew it then, changed completely as mass production made its mark on the world. If we continued manufacturing in the same manner as we did back then, the world would be one big soot pile and waste would be unimaginable. The gap between rich and poor would be 10 fold and slave labour would be rife. But we started to think greener and we learned to reduce waste, we started dealing with equal opportunity for workers and the world became a lot cleaner. We started to respect the needs of people, animals and the land. Sure, we aren’t perfect and there will always be a need to fight for the weak and demand change as we see fit. But each person has their own passion. What is the difference between your passion to keep the political and economical arena honest and that of someone trying to save the tiger from extinction or save a rare species of butterfly? We can’t all be on the same journey, thank goodness.
