Of course we must rehabilitate the prisoners, but extreme caution must be taken when allowing prisoners to vote. Just think if John Gadi and Sammy the Bull Gravano were able to vote on more punishments for mafiosi at the ballot box... Should druggies be able to vote on the legalization of their drugs?
The thing is if prisoners are going to act so in-human, if you excuse the phrasing, then they shouldn't be allowed to have human rights to a certain extent. I just don't see how we can expect anything from Britain as a country that is containing votes for how our country is run , from people who have acted in such a way and broke law.
If you were under the influence of drugs or drunk your not in the right mind frame, you would be turned away at a voting station. Therefore these prisoners who comitt such horrific crimes then surely they cant be in the right mind set, therefore they should be rejected.
I believe yes in rehabilitation, and the vote and other entitlements should be something for prisoners to work towards, SO after rehabilitation they can feel as if they are a new person, accepted into society with full rights.
I think prisons should be a form of punishment. But I do think criminals should be rehabilitated.
I've little experience of the justice system in any form. I was once mugged in France but otherwise I've never had involvement with the police.
The trouble is that I'm not sure how effective prisons are as a deterrent (which is the real purpose of punishment, otherwise it's just gratuitous suffering). No-one wants to go to prison anyway, but would that encourage more people to not commit crimes if they were truly awful? I believe most people commit crimes and hope to get away with it. Very few count on being caught and they don't consider the consequences. If you honestly thought you'd be caught you wouldn't do it.
Maybe the justice system is just a poor solution to an unsolvable problem.
We were just talking about those sort of issues this week in my contemporary social issues class. I believe that prisoners should be rehabilitated. When you really think about it all criminals are either going through a terrible time and don't know how how to deal with it, have been abused but have never properly delt with it, or are mentally ill in some form or another. It's instinct to react and want to make them feel the pain that they have caused others but it's not right because when you have a family member in jail it all changes and you see the other side and how it's not just black and white.
Prisoners should have the right to vote and if someone doesn't think they should they should think about how much they care about them anyways and then think....does it really matter enough to argue about it? If you don't care about them then why argue. Just give them the right to vote, they might even vote for the same party as you.
I agree with you though. If you're rehabilitating them then surely telling them that theyre not important enogh to vote isn't going to help.

If that makes any sense!
