I had the same happen to me. I updated my firmware in the US on my iPhone and then AT&T said they would not honour the $50 prepaid data I had bought literally hours before.
I had to switch to a monthly plan instead of the pay as you go model.
I was furious - but hands were tied. (to a phone!)
