Could the arrival of ebooks really endanger the writing itself? That's the view of the Booker prize winning author Graham Swift. He believes that digital publishing could threaten the livelihood of authors in the future because they are being paid too little. He himself was able to give up teaching and become a full time author after the commercial success of his 1983 novel, Waterland. He went on to win the Booker Prize with Last Orders. As part of our series on the future of the book, I talked to Graham Swift - in a rare interview - and asked whether it made any difference to him whether the reader was clasping a printed book.
