If I look into my heart I know that I'm fundamentally unwilling to draw any other person into my way of seeing and being in the world, which is not my way at all, it's simply a loving response, there's a way to be in the world which is simply a loving response. But love isn't a pop song is it, hey? Not really. Love is self-sacrifice and sacrifice. It's letting go of... well, you know what love is, I don't have to tell you what love is, you know what love is. Yes there's bliss, and yes there's suffering.

When you encounter a pure heart it's persuasive but I don't want to persuade anyone here. A loving life is, you know, a life that really is a loving response is profoundly counter cultural, it puts you on the outer in every room you'll ever be in, you are contrary to norms. Why would I encourage anyone to do that?

I think of myself as a twenty-one year old, his ambition and bright eyes, his drive... and within a few months some tinkering sound in him turns him around, slowly, slowly turns him around, because the inkling is there's a way to live life that is wholly a loving response, and the more he comprehends that, the less he is the person he thought he was, the less recognisable he is to himself or to others.

If I could speak to him I'd say "If you can shrug this off, shrug it off. Honour your ambition, take what you can, take. Be decent, be civil, but find a place in the world. Be creative. Be good. But find your place in the world. If you can shrug off the loving response of your whole life then by all means do it. Don't give your life away if you don't have to. If you can hold on to it hold on to it. But my loving friend if you can't, if that inkling light keeps calling you then give, give, give, give all your love that you can, because that's all you can do, no matter how incoherent it may seem, how unrecognisable you may become, give, give, give, because you know you can. There's a way, there's a way to love and be a life of whole love, there's a way and you know it's true".
