Foreign Secretary William Hague has said that Britain vetoed the deal to renegotiate EU treaties because EU leaders had not made "enough effort to meet Britain's concerns".
He told the Today programme that the government was being "sensible" in standing aside from a new treaty, insisting that Britain "is not being isolated".
The foreign secretary added that the whole government, including Nick Clegg, had agreed "in advance" to the terms under which they would use the veto.
When pressed by Justin Webb on whether Britain's relationship would be fundamentally changed as a result of standing aside from the new fiscal treaty, William Hague answered that it "is far too early to jump to that conclusion".
