One in every one hundred babies born has autism, but it is not usually diagnosed until a child is at least two or three.
A new study has shown for the first time that brain activity in babies as young as six months can help predict if the child will develop the condition.
Earlier diagnosis would allow doctors and parents to intervene earlier to help the child counter its effects.
Co-lead on the study Tony Charman, professor in autism education at the Institute of Education, outlines the findings.
