GM: ‘Please don’t destroy our crop’

Can there be a meeting of minds between researchers into GM crops and those who are hostile to the technology?
Scientists at Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire, working on a kind of wheat which they say would need less pesticide and bring other benefits have written an open letter to protestors who are determined to try to close down the site where the crops are going to be grown.
Organic farmer Gerald Miles told the Today programme that he believes there is a risk of contamination to other wheat crops.
The GM crop is a "waste of money" and could "ruin" the wheat market, he adds.
Prof John Pickett, leader of the research team, defended the experiment and says that they are dedicated in finding new ways to "protect our crops".
They have gone through "amazingly scrupulous procedures" and followed very strict advice to ensure the GM crops cannot escape.
"Please don't destroy our crop," he said to Mr Miles.
