A Human Rights Watch report says Nato has failed to acknowledge dozens of civilian casualties which occurred during air strikes during its 2011 Libya campaign.
David Mepham, UK Director of Human Rights Watch, told the Today programme's John Humphrys that Nato have an "obligation" to properly investigate civilian deaths that have come as a result of Nato strikes.
"If it was your mother or you daughter that was blown away by Nato strikes you would want to know what happened," he said.
Nato spokesperson Oana Lungescu said the alliance deeply regretted civilian deaths, but that "unprecedented precision and care" had been taken to avoid casualties.
Nato would be willing to support an investigation, she said, but has no mandate from the Libyan authorities to carry out an assessment on the ground. #casualties #HumanRightsWatch #libya #nato
