Lovely photo of your grandparents. He has a lovely kind face. My grandfather lived about ten yrs after my grandmother died. He came to live with my parents for his final two years and I think that experience made his last few years a little less lonely and a lot happier. And even if we all just stopped by for short visits with him, it made all the difference. Granumentally is lucky to have you.

It's sad, as you say, but I think I would rather be ready for death, or even looking forward to it, than be on my deathbed, wishing I wasn't dying.
