Broadcaster George Hook explains why new technology is so important for older people and why you should nominate an older person for one of this year's Google Silver Surfer Awards 2012, in association with Age Action. Hi Bernie,
Thanks for your interest. The target group for the Silver Surfer awards is: older people using technology to enhance the quality of their lives; their family and friends who are aware of this use (and so can nominate them; IT tutors (who can nominate students -- there is also a prize category for them). To qualify to be nominated (for all but the IT tutors award) you have to be 50 or older.
So, as you can see, the target audience for the award publicity is quite broad. We have had some remarkable winners over the previous three years, but by highlighting some of these we might scare people away from nominating others. So, we are looking for the public to nominate someone who uses technology, and in such a way that it enhances the quality of their life.
We hope that the positive experience of the winners and those short listed will help other older people to "take the plunge", overcome their fears, and start learning. Unfortunately, at the moment in Ireland over 70% of over-65s do not have IT skills.
Thanks again for your interest. Full details about the awards and the prize categories are on our website at goo.gl/wxzLI
Eamon.

Who is the target demographic in the Silver Surfer Awards programme (i.e., something more specific than the age group).
