Kofi Annan wrote in the Financial Times on Friday morning of what he called the "destructive lure of national rivalries" in the Syria crisis -- and he appealed to all the parties involved, both Syrian and non-Syrian, to be prepared to shift their positions. His spokesman throughout his period as Syria envoy -- and indeed for many years before -- was Ahmed Fawzi.
