“Behind is the fun fair, to the left is music from the Village Inn cabaret tent, and to the right is music from a dance tent. Towards the end of the recording the West Midlands Fire Brigade bring up the tail of the parade, adding sirens and air horns to the sound of the crowd. It's Gay Pride, as it is every year at the end of May, and Hurst Street is heaving with party goers. The photo was taken just a few metres further down the road in 2009.”

“These are the sounds in Birmingham's Victoria Square on the last Saturday in May every year as the Gay Pride parade gets under way. The parade took over 15 minutes to pass, and so this recording is a medley. It starts with the Dhol Blasters, moves on to Chicken Mick revving up all 492 litres of his motortrike, and finally after various floats are a motorbike, a Range Rover, a fire pump, and an aerial rescue platform from the West Midlands Fire Brigade, all making an absolutely splendid racket. “Bournville station is sandwiched between part of the Cadbury site and the canal. In this recording you can hear two stopping class 323 electric multiple unit trains from opposite directions, and a canal barge heading South through the night. You will also hear what sounds like Julian Clary using the PA system to warn of "slippery services" at the station. British station announcements have long been a source of amusement. This recording was originally nearly seven minutes long but I have reduced it to the Audioboo maximum of five minutes by cutting chunks out of the near-silences. ”

“A class 323 electric multiple unit arrives at a busy platform on Birmingham's New Street station, but what was that first announcement? Station announcements in Britain tend to be somewhat comical. Towards the end of the recording you can hear someone saying "What's that?". An occupational hazard of making field recordings is strangers asking what you are doing, something they would never bother to do if you were using a camera (unless they were some moron in a high-vis jacket looking to book another "terrorist"). ”

I cut it down to the Audioboo five minute maximum by taking out chunks of the diesel multiple unit to my left that eventually pulled out right at the end of the recording. I left in all the station announcements.”

    • brummig I wanted to get a longer recording of the Krishna devotees I had seen shortly before in New Street and chased after them, but they kept changing direction randomly. Then they stopped chanting altogether when the man with the microphone handed the under-arm megaphone to a boy of about 14 who then continued the chant. I left them at the end of Lower Temple Street as they disappeared down Navigation Street.
