chris1990king My 5/6th year maths was me creating my own notes from a textbook. Teacher had no classroom management and used only very weak assessment/questioning. Majority of kids sat and did no work. So I took it upon myself, similar to your former pupil, to create my own notes and work independently. However this was localized to a single teacher, not sure how much of an impact the school ethos had. School actually had a very positive ethos and pupils were generally eager to learn, I think that a bad teacher can set up their own environment which is independent from the rest of the school. The skills I acquired did prove to be useful at University; however I would have preferred to have had a capable maths teacher and saved myself a lot of stress.

“Thanks, Claire: you add to the argument for the good teacher. I wonder if you would have felt the same if after an hour with your professor, you still didn't understand the response to your question.” -

stuartphysics You raise a number of important questions. I think the move towards a Masters profession is admirable but it can only happen if the appropriate support structures are in place - and as you say probably the most significant is time. There are some who seem to want to import aspects of the Finnish system - BGE, Masters profession for example but cherry picking some parts without other won't make them work.

Want to help SpaceKate make it into space? Do you have any tips or tricks? Maybe you've just discovered the excitement of space and want to share that with the world, or perhaps you work in the space industry and would be willing to explain a little about what you do.
This collection of audio will then be available via SpaceKate.com and I'd love to hear from you - even if it is just a hello! I'm particularly interested in finding interesting guests for a potential series of podcasts based around space, spaceflight, education and science - if you know someone who would be good, leave a message in this stream and I'll try to get in touch with them. Many thanks! Aim high!

Bletchley Park is the historic site of secret British codebreaking activities during WWII.
It is the birthplace of modern computing.
Winston Churchill described the Codebreakers as "The geese who laid the golden egg but never cackled."
Here you will find stories told by the codebreakers, staff and volunteers, audio from events and lectures, stories which are still emerging and reports on the progress of the development of Bletchley Park.

“Thanks, John. To be fair, I do think that Mike is aware of online culture as one can be whilst in a ministerial office - his use of twitter, blipfoto (as @feorlean) is testament to that. I also believe that his engagement with us through #EDIFF and #eduscotICT is the envy of other countries, not least south of the border. I am not convinced that any government, devolved or otherwise, has the power to make significant cultural change in education the way things are: the real and only power is in the hands of COSLA and the grace and favour of LA politics. I can verify from first-hand experience that this is corrupt, dysfunctional and the biggest obstacle to innovation and progress faced by all involved in education.”
