We campaign for free wifi in hospitals because we think it is very important for people to be able to keep in touch with families/friends/news. If you had no phone apart from the ward one, would you have felt better or worse? If you have normal access to the online world a lot of us live in does it make it all easier to cope with? Your thoughts would be appreciated. The hospitals I have been a patient in or visited have not had wifi and still have the old fashioned 'turn off mobiles' signs up.” -

355.711Ed Vaizey: Europe 'looks to UK as leaders' on broadband
10 months ago1343721844
1 like2 comments“Dear Ed Vaizey. It isn't fibre broadband unless its fibre to the home. If you spend our money on stupid cabinets then history will remember it well. It is shortsighted to patch up the old phone network. We need fibre. Moral and optic. Support the altnets, get fibre to the rurals and get some competition going. If you want futureproof you won't get it through copper. Rurals can't afford BT FTTP because of hundreds of thousands of excess charges. They can however afford a couple of thousand via an altnet, as that increases the value of their property and is an investment in their future. Stop believing that just because our fantastic phone network delivered 1st generation broadband it can deliver the future. It can't, and we will be left behind, throttled, capped and tied to an obsolete infrastructure.” -

“Amazingly correct, totally agree. We can always go back in time and live in caves to keep the dinosaurs happy. Its about time we got this information more widely spread and got everyone woken up to the digital age. It isn't going to go away, we have to harness it.” -

“spot on John. Also worth mentioning that if we settle for 15meg through a cabinet now, we have lost the chance for further upgrades. If we stick out for fibre then we have an upgrade path built in.” -

196.85Here's @cyberdoyle on BBC Radio Wales talking #b4rn community-led rural fibre broadband
about 1 year ago1335473243
“Its awful hearing yourself on radio isn't it? I think we're gonna have to rope more of the management team in for interviews! it came over ok though, apart from the fact that the interviewer hadn't done her homework and doesn't know I already skype the grandchildren most days... I am one of the lucky ones in this area with a community wifi connection. I know full well that this isn't going to be good enough for the future needs of this area, and we have to get cracking and build something that is. Thankfully everyone is realising this and getting out their spades. Hope Wales follows suit and doesn't fall for stopgap solutions, though I do know how tempting it is just to get a connection... Bring on the fibre. Power to the People.” -

In just over one amazing week, a group of Twitter collaborators created a book, titled 2:46: Aftershocks: Stories from the Japan Earthquake also known as “#quakebook”, to raise money for Japanese Red Cross earthquake and tsunami relief. As well as narratives by people who braved the disaster, the book contains essays by authors William Gibson and Barry Eisler, as well as artist/musician Yoko Ono.
