“I like your boos, mansionwit, and I've shared some of them. I find this one very interesting: you write "... you hate ..." but listen to what you've said! Funny! Languages do break logical patterns and poor learners have to follow them. Then, Schwa, I believe, is an unchecked short central vowel that contrasts the but-vowel which is checked short central vowel. Mansionwit, as you come to English after French, I do so after Hindi-Urdu. Mais, je parle Francaise, en peu. Do you follow my boos?”

“Most learners in this part of the world fall into the spelling-pronunciation trap if they start with the word 'pronounce' and then arrive at its derivative in the noun form by innocently adding -iation to pronounc(e) to get 'pronounciation'*. What they need is to mark the spelling change to correct it to proNUNciation.”

“Aspiration of /p t k/ is a salient feature of Standard English pronunciation. But these sounds are NOT aspirated when they follow /s/ even in stressed syllables. Most educated Indians, after they've learnt - the hard way - to aspirate /p t k/ become an easy victim of hyper-correction. Then you'll notice them saying desPHITE*, bestHOWED*, exTHEMpore*...”

Last night on timesnow NEWSHOUR DEBATE, I heard Arnab Goswami, the anchor say EXTEMPORE in three syllables: eks.tem.pour, which is the general Indian way of pronouncing this word. Thus, I think, Indian television is giving enormous strength to establishing the proposed General Indian Pronunciation by RKBansal”
