“@henrypage Why do you(/does she) assume that the "brochure" will be giving advice on loopholes, rather than just advice on how the relief should apply?”

“"people being flayed alive". Sounds charming. Not watching it myself, but I can understand delaying the episode if it features a similar scene or story to a real life incident, but I wouldn't have thought it made sense to not show it at all. I recall the beeb delaying Good Cop. Good decision, but it did rather lose momentum. I suppose it's easy for the BBC to do that as they have many dramas of varying lengths during a season. Aren't the US seasons more prescriptive in terms of length?”

“I was talking about this episode with my brother-in-law and we concluded that it was a story that ticked all the boxes - catchphrase, monsters lurking in ordinary places, running about - but somehow didn't excite. Maybe we've been spoiled by series openers like Impossible astronaut. I'd forgotten about the Idiots Lantern. Was that the one with Maureen Lipman?”

“I'll resist e-books for as long as possible, but then inevitably (as with the move from CDs to mp3s) I'll move on and won't look back to paperbacks. Whereas musicians can make a living by touring, I'm not sure what the lesser-selling author will do.”

Above the Eagle by Mr P Bryce

    • lpf20 This poem, Above the Eagle by a Mr P Bryce, was printed in Peter Rhodes' column of the Express and Star newspaper shortly before the 66th aniversary of the Battle of Britain. I haven't heard a reading or seen it published elsewhere so I thought I'd give it an airing. Trouble is, I couldn't sound less like a World War Two fighter pilot if I tried. If you can do it justice with a better reading, please do so.
