“Hi rjnet, If I'd thought I was speaking to a few million people I would not have sounded calm! If this doesn't sound too glib - the trick is to realise you're speaking to only ONE person. Which is perfectly true. But... well... times a few million. It's best to ignore the latter part of the equation :-)” -

“Hi Andrew. Thanks for you comment. Yes, Radio 4 newsreaders self-op the summaries, including the four minute one at midday, which can have four or five clips. The bulletins and sequences are too complicated to self-op and a studio manager does the honours. Radio 4 continuity is self-op now except between 0520 and 0600, when one announcer takes on both the continuity and newsreading roles. Self-opping continuity makes self-opping the news summaries look like a picnic! ” -

I'm made of radio, music, comedy, coffee and hugs. I present 'Late Night Loaf' on MintFM and often can be found spouting nonsense on the British Tech BIG show. -

“I don't mind the earlies or the days. But I don't like the lates. Evenings are for relaxing and having fun with.... hedgehogs, for example. Nightshifts are the real pain - haven't done those for years and I don't miss 'em at all!” -

“LOL :-) Typical! I don't get to go to bed until about 2 a.m., remember! :-) And Harriet will probably have to set her alarm for 3.30 a.m.!” -

I'm the technology correspondent at the BBC - and a man who likes to fiddle uncomprehendingly with new bits of tech, and then hurl them against the wall when they don't work -

Juliaball How are the prickley family? Is Leela being forced to give up some of her dinner? (Hedgepigs love cat food!)

Juliaball Well I always liked shifts (well the thought of it anyway, and only till I had kids) at least you get to pass the evening in an air conditioned atmosphere, which is great at the moment :-)

“Mark - Good old Rory. BTW - I also used AudioBoo during a charity bike ride I took part in on Sunday and people seemed to like that. Kind of made the whole thing more tangible. And you can tell how much more tired I am towards the end: helped my sponsors feel they were getting their money's worth :-) With my radio producer hat on, I kept wishing I could edit the audio. But in reality, any bells and whistles would've taken too long. I'd never have completed the ride if I could edge-in and cross-fade! So the simplicity of recording, adding a photo and a description - all without getting too much sun lotion all over the phone - was exactly what I needed. ” -

“Glad you both found it interesting. Hoping to do another one from Radio 4 Continuity. If so, will post as @sleat via Twitter as usual. There were some other comments on this one there, if you're interested. Belladax, between summaries... there are editorial meetings to attend, correspondents to listen to as they file reports, agency wires to keep an eye across, other outlets to monitor, pronunciations to be checked. And of course getting our heads round the script before we read it. Also, we are the last pair of eyes across a piece of copy before it gets transmitted, so we try to proof read things before airtime. With breaking stories though, you can often find yourself sight reading new material on air. However, I did get a cup of tea in the sun with @kathyclugston, since she'd arrived early for her evening shift and there was a lull before my 1800 bulletin. We had a very satisfying natter, as you can imagine. :-)” -

rjnet I realise this was posted "yonks" back, but it is very interesting nonetheless. Given that you were preparing to speak to a few million people you seemed remarkably calm!
