WhatsofunnyA RECENT JOINT STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES INDICATES THAT 23% OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS ARE ALCOHOL RELATED. THIS MEANS THAT THE REMAINING 77% ARE CAUSED BY IDIOTS WHO DRINK BOTTLED WATER, STARBUCKS, JUICE, ENERGY DRINKS AND CRAP LIKE THAT. THEREFORE, BEWARE OF THOSE WHO DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL. THEY CAUSE THREE TIMES AS MANY ACCIDENTS.
What’s so funny about this? You don’t have to agree with this joke to laugh at it. I don’t, but I do think it’s funny. What makes it funny is the twisted logic. Let’s take a closer look at it. The first sentence is a factual statement that 23% of traffic accidents are caused by drivers drinking alcohol; no argument there. Next is where the fun starts. By subtracting 23% from 100% we calculate that the other 77% of drivers were not drinking alcohol. If they weren’t drinking alcohol then they must have been drinking something else, because everybody drinks, right? WRONG. Even if we list all the other things that people drink, such as bottled water, Starbucks coffee, and energy drinks, that doesn’t mean that people drink these things for the same reason that they drink booze. Let’s face it, people drink alcohol for its effects, the high, the buzz, etc. all of which impairs their judgment and reflexes. The liquids do not have the same effect. Bottled water may be stupid and expensive and a marketing trick to get you to pay for water you could get for free out of your kitchen faucet, but it doesn’t get you high. It just keeps you alive and hydrated. Starbucks is also overpriced and a rip-off, but the caffeine is a stimulant as are energy drinks. These both enhance awareness and don’t impair or make it less. So none of these drinks is likely to contribute to your having an accident the way alcohol does.
But the joke begs to differ. The reasoning is you should be very careful when driving around people who drink coffee, water or Gatorade, because they are three times more likely to cause accidents than the plain old drunk driver.
And THAT’s what’s so funny!
