A quiet moment of reflection about #londonriots. I am heartbroken
I hope it's not either-or when the chips are down. Almost all of the BBC anchors and reporters I've been watching on their live feed have been mixing commentary and reporting, which is very much unlike their standard fiction that they are somehow above individual points of view. It comes off as much more authentic. As a media consumer, I would rather understand the perspective of a reporter than have to try to figure it out.
I'm not really being a journalist, I'm being an "ordinary citizen". This is my town, my London, it hurts to see it like this. Journalist friends in Egypt spoke of the difficulty they had during the revolution there - were they journalists or Egyptians? Only now do I truly understand that difficult dilemma properly.
This situation reminds me of when we spoke about funding at the NASA Ames tweetup -- it's one thing to complain about the loss of funding and social strife brought about by austerity and income inequality, but another thing to figure out how to make the basic changes necessary to address the problem. Here are some resources that can help: http://equalitytrust.org.uk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iFvhDK-5OE http://tinyurl.com/howtaxes http://pennyred.blogspot.com/2011/08/panic-on-streets-of-london.html Please don't be sad, or angry. Journalists such as yourself have far more ability to affect positive change than ordinary citizens such as myself. The greatest loss would be letting that opportunity go to waste.

Splendid work, RK! A woman who knows her media talking to a man who knows his :) Let's see who knows best..!
Love this. Stephen Nolan hasn't a clue.. But i have a feeling he will have.. soon. Although i also have a feeling he may have to retrain at some point after he makes way for the less skeptical.
I listen to Nolan on fivelive regularly. Love the voice, and the attitude. Not sure if Boo fits the bill, plus I wonder whether the BBC is cool with it anyway, they are becoming SO fecking proprietary with their content, especially for people like me who listen from outside the UK (US and Germany, in my case).
