As for backing up, I learned the hard way when my computer napped it and wiped out 4 years work. All I got back was the bit I had stored on the laptop. Now I have an expansion drive, several memory sticks, two computers and just to add a piece of string to the belt and braces, I email the important files to myself and store them online.
