libbywalkupGreat piece. Great sort of twist at the end. Maybe it's because I, regardless that I haven't had any children yet, but a Women's Studies minor at university, completely understand where the story is coming from, I don't feel the explanation at the end was at all necessary. It was well clear in the story. Enjoyed it. Thanks.
AnnieEvettoh gosh.. thanks Icy!! *blush*
its a first draft and I prob should go and dust it of a bit more.
and yes other commenters.. your body knows what to do.. you just need to trust it...
PJ - I'd love to think that conversations over a birthing woman was rare.. perhaps they are in your part of the world - but here in Aust, we are fighting for the right to birth at home....yeah - don't get me started...

The reveal halfway through the story is pretty great, and I appreciated the layers of meaning in the doctor's conversation. It really is annoying until the reveal. Beyond that, your description is is very good and I could almost see the scene. Excellent, Annie.
AnnieEvettThis is a very silly first draft written for a prompt using a styrofoam cup, a wet noodle and a feather.

spare-shadeHi!
I hope that you may be to participate in this project.
"the act of listening is the act of inscribing” project explores the notions of home, poem and the human voice.
I am asking you to voice your home.
This can be many things, said in many different ways.
It can be a thought, a feeling, an emotion, a memory, a confusion, whatever it is that is housing your being now.
Or, it can simply be your sense of home - a feeling of being at home.
Maybe it is just a word, a poem, or a thought that is on your mind right now. It could be a broken dish in your sink. Or, a place, a situation you are in. It can be a worry that is preoccupying you, or an aspiration you are pursuing. It can be this moment, or a memory. It can be a ruin, or a broken home.
Whatever home is for you, or whatever houses your thoughts or brings you closer to home, or to this moment, please voice it.
Time is a commodity in great demand but rather limited and jealousy guarded supply, so I sincerely appreciate you sharing it.
And I would appreciate if you record home in your voice as an audio-boo – my account is http://audioboo.fm/spare-shade .

Thank you,
ivan

jen_bThis is terrific, Annie. I went to read it at your blog just because I wanted to get all the details fixed in my mind. It's a horror, sure, but so well described, and not knowing why she's there or what comes next, I chose to read it as a moment without a prequel or sequel, satisfied in the paradise. I don't know. I just really enjoyed this one.
AnnieEvettThe first draft of this can be read over on my writers blog http://annieevett.blogspot.com/2010/10/lonely-in-paradise.html
