allanadlSome good points James, hopefully response is a sign of engagement and your noting of the importance of relationships is surely needed for the teacher to help the student/s to make a difference in the world.
I think people listening to this episode should reflect on what Geoff means when he introduces the idea that to just test for knowledge is often low-level assessment. Teachers need to give students opportunities to demonstrate mastery of high-level skills. They need to show learners that the assessment matters that it is an opportunity to practice skills that will help the learner make a difference in the world.
Teachers need to show learners they can express informed opinions supported by evidence. That the skills they are mastering are not artificial but real.
This provides a much richer environment and engages with the learners. Teachers however need to know where the learners are at and communicate with them.
Then Geoff spoke of the need for teachers to not approach the task of teaching alone and the importance of teamwork and communities of practice. Finally he challenged teachers to start small - to pick one thing that they can change and get feedback from the students then build on it
