She was shot dead as she left Mass in south Belfast along with her magistrate father Tom. One of the IRA unit which killed her, Mary McArdle, has been appointed a special adviser to Sinn Féin Culture minister Carál Ní Chuilín at Stormont. The Travers family has opposed the appointment, and called on Mary McArdle to step down or be sacked.
