“Aaah. Reminds me of the StephenFryBoo. He's good at that... (and has recently warned us that he's going to start boo'ing again) More of a technical tip to apache users (of which there are many!) - turn off KeepAlives if you're sites going to be bombarded!! We had this during the G20 protests last year, where browsers would merrily hold open a socket on the server on the off-chance they wanted to make another request - and this caused all of the "slots" on the server to fill. This meant the site was down and wouldn't respond at all. 20 minutes later and all was happy again with only a slightly overheating pair of servers... Or use nginx :-) A thoroughly more up-to-date and sensible server. Top-tip number two: offload static assets to more capable S3 servers, until you've got your infrastructure sorted!! ” -

“Awesome idea, played around with this on a smaller scale (and with WiFi) ages ago, but it does sound like a sensible idea. I'll have to see if I can get hold a database of church locations... As I see it, however, surely the limiting factor is in uptake as a rural location won't have the sheer number of paying subscribers necessary to justify the investment in WiMax / WiFi kit and infrastructure you'd need to install. On the other hand, that may only be the reason why traditional network operators don't get involved. But they spend far too much on kit anyway. I'd love to play around with something like this.... hint hint.... There are also a number of PoPs offering IP Transit in milton keynes, so you wouldn't have to go too far.” -

“It's going to be more than 3 digits ;-) It would probably be an idea to break the suggestion down into two pieces: 1) if someone searches for the boo id it *should* come up with the boo, it doesn't at the moment. Your instructions would be tweaked to ask people to search for the ID or short code. 2) the ID for the audio clip is returned to the iphone after upload but not displayed, we'd have to come up with a neat way of displaying it - if you wanted to see it. Alternatively if your boos are being tweeted then you could take the number from the boo URL; http://boos.fm/b1234, the ID is 1234. Second alternative is to compress the integer ID into a higher base number (i.e. include letters, too). This would dramatically reduce the length of the ID and make it into more of a short-code. This would need the iPhone to display the code on recording. Something for us to think about.” -

“Aah. Presumably you had grub chain-loading windows xp, so by formatting the linux partition you've lost your bootloader.... Have you tried booting using a windows CD and getting into the recovery console? From in there you just need to mark the windows partition as 'active' (using fdisk) and possibly run fixmbr / fixboot to make your machine boot back into windows again.” -
