The internet is undoubtedly a positive tool for daily life. Immediate communication and easy access to information are among the many benefits we get from using the web. However, the internet has its downsides, the most common one being cyber attacks.

Cyber attacks can be in the form of infecting devices with malware or code malicious enough to collect your personal data. Due to the risk everyone faces of being hacked, it is vital to stay safe every time we use the internet.

Simple Security Tips to Keep You Safe

Many people think of computer security as technical and complex, and it sometimes is. However, the important security measures are actually very simple. Common cyber security threats include viruses, spyware, malware, and identity theft. Here are simple ways to keep yourself safe from such attacks.

    Keep Your Software Updated

Make sure to update your operating system and all the apps you use. Microsoft, Adobe, Google, Apple, and other technology companies release regular security patches for their users. Updating your system helps eliminate current and new threats. Therefore, you might want to think twice the next time you feel like postponing a version update.

    Use Effective Passwords

A hacker can get to you through your passwords, so using effective ones is a sure way to keep attackers away. A strong password consists of at least eight characters with a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

Additionally, change passwords at least every three months and never reuse old passwords. Doing so makes it even harder for anyone with prior access to your accounts to access your device and network. Lastly, do not publish your passwords anywhere, and do not share them with anyone.

    Use Anti-virus and Anti-malware Solutions

You need a few things to protect your computer: a good firewall, an antivirus program, and antimalware software. Both Windows and macOS have built-in firewalls, and it’s easy to find third-party solutions that provide adequate protection.

Choosing an antivirus or antimalware software can be difficult, but you can always refer to evaluations and comparison tools to find the right solution for your specific needs.

    Beware of Phishing Mails

If you have ever received an unauthorized account change email from your bank asking you to enter your credentials, you might have found that highly suspicious. It is advisable in such instances to call your financial institution before rushing to respond to such emails. Phishing emails are sent with the intent to steal your data, infect your devices, or in this case, access your financial information.

When you receive suspicious emails, look closely at the sender and hover over the URL to see what it links to. Note whether they refer to you by name or “Dear Customer.” Additionally, most of these emails are prone to misspellings. In general, it’s a good idea to be careful with anything that appears in your inbox.

Understand That You Are Also a Target

Understand that everyone is subject to cyberattacks. In today’s modern world, no one is too insignificant to be attacked. Your personal and financial data are just as valuable as those of celebrities and wealthy people.

Apply as many measures to keep yourself and those around you safe. Remember, your devices not only have your personal information, but they can also give a hacker access to the computers on your network.

Use Proxies to Connect to the Internet

A proxy server is a computer that passes requests between clients and the internet. When you load a web page, you want to route your request through a proxy server. Proxy servers will use their own IP addresses when processing these requests while yours remains hidden.

Moreover, proxies have a myriad of other uses. Premium proxy providers, for instance, offer data center, residential, and mobile proxies for secure surfing, price comparisons, accessing geo-restricted content, and market research. At IPRoyal, you’ll be spoilt for choice as you search through the affordable services offered.

It’s Not Rocket Science, Even for Beginners

None of these ideas are particularly advanced. You don’t need a complicated program or computer science degree to implement them. They are an easy way to enhance security and make web surfing a much more enjoyable experience.
