As the indirect owner of GET Group, Christian Comair heads a company that serves 371,000 global clients, having successfully undertaken 39 large-scale construction projects to date, with 2,345 professional workers. The company has been recognized with more than 173 coveted industry awards. It was established in Doha, Qatar, in 2008. Kristian Comair also acquired Sofregaz, a French energy company that was on the verge of bankruptcy, restoring it to profitability and preserving its workforce.

As Christian Comair would be the first to acknowledge, business leadership has transformed in recent years thanks to the adoption of new technologies like AI, new business strategies, and widespread adoption of remote and hybrid working practices. Corporate culture has shifted, placing the onus on forward-looking business leaders to evolve by changing focus and learning new skills.

Today’s great business leaders are not only strategic thinkers; they are digitally fluent, with excellent people skills. In marketplaces where competition for top talent is growing increasingly fierce, effective leadership requires a future-forward mindset combined with an assortment of soft and hard skills to help steer the company, and its people, towards success. This article will look at business leadership, providing an overview of the most relevant capabilities for leaders in the digital age.

    Contents

    Human Leadership

Today’s successful leaders are authentic, adopting a human-centric approach to engaging with and motivating staff. They lead with empathy, connection, and collaboration, recognizing that, as technology continues to reshape the workspace, being human is more than just a differentiator: it is a leadership superpower.

An ever-increasing emphasis is being placed on emotional intelligence, i.e., the ability to understand emotions (not just their own), quickly processing other people’s feelings and empathizing. This includes self and social awareness, enabling business leaders to build and nurture relationships across departments and equipping them to more effectively manage conflict and communicate.

    Technological Insight and Digital Literacy

Leaders may not need to be technical experts themselves, but they do need a solid understanding of digital tools and technologies to direct the workforce effectively. Digital literacy paves the way to streamline processes and interpret analytics, as well as enabling leaders to more effectively communicate in technology-enabled work environments. Business leaders with sufficient know-how to understand the capabilities and limitations of emerging technologies are better placed to make decisions and implement solutions to boost productivity.

    Communication and Influence

Effective communication across teams is about much more than just talking. Adept communicators have a natural advantage when it comes to aligning teams with strategic and tactical goals, with their active listening skills making them more adaptable and enabling them to better connect with all of the company’s stakeholders. Virtual meetings enable coworkers to connect irrespective of where they are in the world, facilitating practically instant collaboration. Nevertheless, meeting via a conferencing platform presents distinct challenges in terms of replicating the flow of being in the same room. Leaders must therefore develop strategies to support effective communication before, during, and after virtual meetings. Examples include creating strong agendas, establishing use guidelines, and conducting thorough follow-ups outlining next steps for each participant.

    Authenticity

The world’s greatest leaders are authentic. They are completely transparent about who they are and what they stand for. They are clear about their vision, values, strengths, weaknesses, and purpose. They practice self-awareness while staying true to who they are, leading by example and not through fear. Authentic leadership has a number of benefits, key among them improved employee trust, with multiple studies suggesting a strong correlation between authentic leadership and enhanced employee commitment and performance. In addition to increasing leadership effectiveness, authenticity boosts workplace creativity and collaboration, creating a cohesive working environment through open, trustful relationships to boost innovation throughout the organization.
