    How to Turn ISO 14644 Classification into an ISO 7 Cleanroom User Requirement

    Quick answer: An ISO 14644 cleanroom classification defines airborne-particle concentration limits and a method for demonstrating the class. It does not, by itself, specify one universal air-change rate, pressure differential, HEPA grade, temperature, humidity, gowning system, or production layout. Those choices belong in a user requirement specification (URS) that reflects the process and its risks.

    This is why “build an ISO 7 room” is not a complete procurement brief. Two rooms can share the same classification target but need very different airflow, exhaust, occupancy, recovery, material-transfer, and monitoring strategies. A packaging room, a medical-device assembly room, and a pharmaceutical support room may all use ISO 7, yet their critical operations and contamination sources are not the same.

    Start with the particle limit, then define the operating state

    Under ISO 14644-1:2015, ISO Class 7 corresponds to maximum concentrations including 352,000 particles per cubic meter at 0.5 µm and larger and 2,930 particles per cubic meter at 5.0 µm and larger. Those numbers are meaningful only when the sampling plan and occupancy state are agreed.

    The URS should state whether acceptance is required as-built, at-rest, operational, or in more than one state. It should also define the installed equipment, number of operators, representative activities, door-use assumptions, and production conditions for the operational test. A room that passes while empty may behave differently when operators, carts, heat-producing equipment, and material transfers disturb the airflow.

    Six engineering decisions the class number does not make

    • Airflow and recovery. Select supply volume, distribution, return locations, and recovery expectations from the contamination load and process. A high air-change number cannot correct short-circuiting, blocked returns, or dead zones.
    • Pressure direction. Positive pressure is common for product protection, but hazardous or potent processes may need containment. The pressure cascade must resolve product, operator, and environmental risks together.
    • Filtration layout. Specify filter efficiency, terminal housing, ceiling coverage, access, redundancy, prefiltration, and installed integrity testing as a system. Filter grade alone does not determine room performance.
    • People and material flow. Define gowning stages, personnel airlocks, transfer hatches, waste routes, door interlocks, and cleaning logistics so routine movement does not defeat the clean-air strategy.
    • Thermal and process loads. Account for outdoor air, equipment heat, people, process exhaust, humidity, and future expansion. Cleanliness and comfort failures often share an airflow or load-calculation cause.
    • Monitoring and response. Define what is monitored, alert and action levels, calibration, data review, deviation response, and requalification triggers. Classification is a snapshot; monitoring provides ongoing evidence.

    Translate the goal into an acceptance matrix

    A strong URS separates mandatory acceptance criteria from preliminary design assumptions. The acceptance column should identify the class, particle sizes, room state, test method, and required records. A separate design-basis column can state proposed airflow, pressure, filtration, temperature, humidity, recovery, and redundancy values, together with the calculation or risk assessment that justifies each one.

    For teams evaluating ISO 7 cleanroom requirements, this distinction prevents common specification errors. An air-change range or pressure setpoint may be a useful design starting point, but it should not be presented as though ISO 14644-1 imposes that same value on every ISO 7 room. The final design must show how the selected values support the process, the test state, and the required recovery.

    Plan for the full cleanroom life cycle

    Classification does not end at initial handover. ISO 14644-2:2015 addresses monitoring plans that provide evidence of cleanroom performance, and ISO 14644-4:2022 covers the process from requirements through design, construction, and start-up. Taken together, the series supports a life-cycle approach: define the need, design for it, verify it, monitor it, maintain it, and control changes that may affect performance.

    Is ISO 7 the same as Class 10,000? It is the common modern comparison, but new specifications should use ISO 14644 terminology.

    Does ISO 7 require 30–60 ACH? No. ISO 14644-1 does not set one universal ACH; airflow must be justified for the room and process.

    Must it be positive pressure? Not always. Direction follows the product-protection and containment objective.
